Dr. Hector P. Garcia settled in Corpus Christi after serving in World War II and became a nationally and internationally recognized civil rights leader. Before his death in 1996, he founded the American GI Forum to fight for equal treatment of Hispanic veterans, worked to end school segregation and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
